Leaving Davis Creek

Image
Hi all, we received these photos from Jane Partin showing  Peggy  getting ready to leave Davis Creek on her way down to Harborfest. It was a little cloudy, a little rainy, but still such a beautiful sight. Made for some gorgeous pics too. Many thanks to Jane, and Dave for sharing and always keeping us up-to-date. Guys and dolls, all your hard work sure has paid off. A lot goes into keeping an old wooden boat like this afloat and looking so good. This is a community effort, and we sure are proud. Davis Creek, Mathews County, VA  90 years old, and still working.  In case you haven't seen it, Jane Partin has created a beautiful watercolor of the Peggy of New Point for the foundation. You can get your very own copy, and help us raise a little money in the meantime. Jane's  contact info... Peggy was built in 1925 by Harry A. Hudgins of Peary, VA, for Walter Burroughs of New Point. She was named for Walter and Birdie's younger dau...

Prepping for Harborfest 2015

Image
Hi all, getting the Peggy ready for this year's Harborfest at the Norfolk waterfront, June 5-7. The Chesapeake Bay Workboat (our Virginia state boat) Parade will be Saturday, June 6, at 2:30pm.  Elizabeth River Tug Muster will be Saturday at 4:30, and the Workboat Race will be Sunday at 12:30. For a list of maritime events, click here . See you there!

Labor of love

Image
Let's take a moment and appreciate just how much TLC a wooden boat takes, and how hard these volunteers have to work to keep our Peggy looking great and staying afloat.  Sweaty, dusty, and probably sunburned. Wishing you a cool breezes today, and a few more hands.  This labor of love sure is looking good.

The cleaning continues

Leaving for Deltaville

In need of a little paint, volunteers prepare Peggy for a trip to Deltaville for spring cleaning.  Leaving the Gwynn's Island Boat Yard. Peggy, heading to Deltaville, on the beautiful blue.

Spring maintenance

Thank you Dave Machen for updating us on all the work being done to the Peggy recently. Our volunteers have been hard at work, and we are grateful for... • The gaf, donated by the Eastern Shore Watermen's Museum , which has been cleaned, sanded and varnished, by Paul Vandenbout. • Page Herbert and Dennis Crawford who have 1/3 of the deck painted. • Dave Machen who has installed a proper marine battery charger. • Pete Hall who has completed the hatch cover framing, and is beginning work on the covering. • Bob Gamish for installing the navigation lights, and for currently working on the flag staff. • Bob Lee for cleaning the bilges. Peggy's pull-out is planned for May 8, in Deltaville, VA .

Still waiting on those dates for our spring work days. We are excited to get back to these family boatbuilding projects. Good camaraderie and fun. Will post the schedule as soon we can.

Just a pretty shot of Peggy on the hard from years ago, with lots of sunshine to warm us up.

Jane Partin in the museum, standing with her watercolor of the  Peggy . Local Mathews watercolor artist, Jane Partin, has created this tranquil painting of the Peggy of New Point . She is offering to donate a portion of the proceeds to our foundation. To see a sampling of her work, visit www.janepartin.com. The Peggy print is not online yet, but you can contact Jane and get you very own copy. Thank you Jane!

Pound nets

This series of photos was donated as we put together the 2013 calendar, Peggy of New Point . Working the pound nets... Sculling the tow bat. A lost art? Hoisting the dip net, to be emptied into Peggy's hold, waiting alongside.

Boom being refinished

Image
The guys at the Boat Shop tell me that a boom is currently being refinished, and will be ready, fingers crossed, by Spring. In the meantime, dreary January weather is keeping us indoors, dreaming of blue skies and even bluer water. This pic, courtesy of the Grinnell family, shows Peggy , back in the days when Ed Grinnell fished and dredged local waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

An icy start

Image
Snapped a drive-by pic of our cold looking fleet this morning. Yes, those trees on the horizon are coated in ice. Peggy looks to be in good shape though, and we are making plans for a great 2015, including Peggy work days this Spring. Also, the foundation was given the hull of a mini tugboat, Gill 12, and there will be weekly build days at the Boat Shop for that. Stop by if you're in the neighborhood.
